NewsThe SoJournal -- Read the Spring 2008 Transitional TimesAn introduction from our new Director, Barbara Murphy
I'd like to start by thanking the Board and women of Sojourner Place for giving me this opportunity to serve them as Program and Operations Director. It has taken the hard work and dedication of many people to establish Sojourner Place and keep it operating successfully over the years. I would like to thank each of you individually; however, the entire newsletter wouldn't be enough space to do that. So, to those of you who have served, thank you. Polly's long legacy of excellence as Director of Sojourner Place will be difficult to follow; however, I am up for the challenge. My own recovery from Alcoholism and Drug Addiction began in 1977. Like many recovering people I felt a need to help others as I had been helped. It was that desire that motivated me to quit my job at IBM in 1988 and begin working in social services. I began by working at an Alcohol and Drug detox unit, and I proceeded to work at an addictions center, a Mental Health Case Management organization, and a group home for chronically mentally ill adults in Tucson, AZ. In 1996, I moved to Seattle and have been serving the homeless community here ever since. On May 15th, I started at Sojourner Place and work has been speeding along ever since. By that point, Polly had already moved on to Tucson but, she returned for a few days of orientation. Fortunately, she continues to be available by phone for questions as I learn what I don't know. Jen, our Program Assistant has been more helpful than she'll ever know. The residents and board have also been very helpful as I continue to learn more each day. I look forward to meeting each of you individually as we take this sojourn together. Until then, go in peace. Sincerely, |
